Integrins are adhesion molecules and mediate the attachment of cells to extracellular matrix proteins. Integrin ανβ8 binds to the LAP of TGF-β and mediates the activation of TGF-β1 and 3. αvβ8 is a gatekeeper of TGF-β function. The integrin β8 has been associated with forkhead box P3 (Foxp3)-positive T cells and T-regulatory-specific epigenetic remodeling. FoxP3 is a transcription factor involved in the development of T-regulatory (Treg) cells. Human and mouse effector Treg cells express functional TGF-P-activating integrin ανβ8.
