In eukaryotes, where DNA is packaged as chromatin, condensation of internucleosomal (linker) DNA is effected by the C-terminal tail of histone H1. Its structure and DNA binding are poorly understood, as is the link between H1 phosphorylation and chromatin structural changes during the cell cycle.
