Rce1 is a type II CAAX prenyl endopeptidase first identified in Saccharomyces cerevisiae together with the type I CAAX-processing enzyme, ZMPSTE24/Ste24p or AFC1p. ZMPSTE24/Ste24p is a zinc metalloprotease with a specific role in the processing of prelamin A in all eukaryotes and a-factor in yeast. Rce1 in contrast, has a much wider specificity, processing all farnesylated and geranylgeranylated CAAX proteins.
