Maedi-visna virus (MVV) is a member of the lentivirus subgroup of retroviruses. This virus causes slowly progressive diseases that affect mainly the central nervous system and the lungs of sheep. The primary target cells of MVV infection are cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage, and virus gene expression is activated upon macrophage maturation.
