NeuNAc, an acetylated derivative of the carbohydrate sialic acid, makes the head groups of gangliosides anionic at pH 7, which distinguishes them from globosides. N-Glycolylated (NeuGc) gangliosides are tumor-specific antigens and as such represent attractive targets for cancer immunotherapy.
