Placental Growth Factor is referred to as PIGF. It's a protein that the human PGF gene encodes. PIGF plays a critical role in the process of angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) and is especially significant in promoting the growth of placental blood vessels during pregnancy. It has also been implicated in certain pathological illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis, diabetic retinopathy, and cancer.

PIGF Pathway

  • PIGF Physiological Function: In physiological conditions, PIGF contributes to embryonic development, skeletal growth, and wound healing. PIGF is also involved, together with VEGF, in the 'switch' to pathological angiogenesis, which occurs in disorders such as cancer, eye diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. For instance, PIGF overexpression promotes the development of new blood vessels in malignancies.
  • PIGF Signaling Pathway: The PIGF/VEGF receptor pathway helps in promoting trophoblastic cell migration, which is a key process in the implantation of the embryo and placenta development. Additionally, there is evidence of the potential use of PIGF as a predictive biomarker of pre-eclampsia, a complication that can occur during pregnancy.
  • Abnormal PIGF-Mediated Diseases: Abnormal PIGF levels are also associated with various complications in pregnancy, including miscarriage, preterm birth, fetal growth restriction, and stillbirth. Monitoring PIGF levels could therefore provide valuable information during pregnancy and aid in the management of such complications.

PIGF Antibody Applications

  • Disease Diagnosis: PIGF antibody is often used in determining the levels of PIGF proteins in blood. Overexpression of PIGF proteins is associated with various pathological conditions including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and ocular diseases. Thus, PIGF antibody is significantly useful in disease diagnosis and prognosis.
  • Use in Research: PIGF antibody is used in the study of angiogenesis, enhancing understanding of conditions like cancer where abnormal blood vessel formation occurs. These applications are beneficial in identifying and quantifying PIGF proteins in tissue samples or cell cultures.
  • Therapeutic Applications: Some studies suggest that PIGF antibodies may be helpful in developing treatments for diseases characterized by excessive angiogenesis, such as cancer and age-related macular degeneration. Conceptually, by neutralizing PIGF protein, the antibody may prevent abnormal blood vessel development, thereby controlling disease progression.
