Precursor of gastric secretion in the mucous membrane of the stomach. Progastrin is directed to the regulated secretory pathway by synergistically acting basic and acidic motifs. Progastrin is abnormally released in the blood of patients with different cancers (colorectal, gastric, ovarian, breast, uterus, melanoma…), as the progastrin gene is a direct target of the WNT/β-catenin oncogenic pathway involved in tumorigenesis of many organs.
