Bacterial ATP-binding cassette (ABC) importers play critical roles in nutrient acquisition and are potential antibacterial targets. The MntABC importer uses a membraneanchored SBP, MntC, to chelate Mn(II) from the host environment and present it to the integral membrane transporter, MntB. MntC expression is highly upregulated during infection, and immunization of mice with purified MntC protein can lead to the production of antibodies that confer some protective immunity.
