St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus responsible for several human encephalitis outbreaks over the last 80 years. SLEV is a member of the Flavivirus genus of the Flaviviridae family. Other flaviviruses known to infect humans include dengue virus (DENV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). Each flavivirus is classified into a serocomplex with its own distinct tropism and pathogenesis, based on cross-neutralization tests.
