The encoded preproprotein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate the mature polypeptide that is incorporated into the extracellular matrix surrounding mouse oocytes. Mice lacking the encoded protein develop defective zonae pellucidae that disrupt folliculogenesis, fertility and development.
